Anniversary Gifts by Year: The 1 to 75 Traditional and Modern List

At a glance

  • Year 1 sets paper as the traditional gift and clocks as the modern gift.
  • Years 25, 50, and 60 match on silver, gold, and diamond in both columns.
  • After year 15 the list jumps by five years, leaving the years in between unassigned.
  • Years 1 and 2 sit in the opposite order in older British reference books, though many guides now match the American list.
  • No one has to follow the list; use it as a starting point.

Your parents’ 35th anniversary is six weeks away, and your sister just texted, “Is it coral or jade?” You are standing in the kitchen trying to remember whether year 5 is wood or silverware. Anniversary gifts by year seem simple until you need the answer in a hurry.

This page gives you the full American list in one table: each year from 1 through 15, then every fifth year through 75, with a traditional material and a modern alternative side by side. You will also find the British differences, where the list came from, how to use the themes without overthinking, and what to write in the card.

Anniversary gifts by year from 1 to 75

Wedding anniversary gifts by year give each listed year two entries: a traditional material and a modern alternative beside it, starting with paper and clocks for year 1 and marking silver, gold, and diamond at years 25, 50, and 60. The list below gives you the American pairings most people want when an anniversary is close.

Year Traditional Modern
1st Paper Clocks
2nd Cotton China
3rd Leather Crystal or glass
4th Fruit and flowers Appliances
5th Wood Silverware
6th Iron Wood
7th Wool or copper Desk sets
8th Bronze Linens or lace
9th Pottery Leather
10th Tin or aluminum Diamond jewelry
11th Steel Fashion jewelry
12th Silk Pearls
13th Lace Textiles or furs
14th Ivory Gold jewelry
15th Crystal Watches
20th China Platinum
25th Silver Silver
30th Pearl Diamond
35th Coral Jade
40th Ruby Ruby
45th Sapphire Sapphire
50th Gold Gold
55th Emerald Emerald
60th Diamond Diamond
65th Blue sapphire No modern gift
70th Platinum No modern gift
75th Diamond and gold No modern gift

This is the American list in widest use. From year 16 onward it skips the years between the five-year marks, so nothing is assigned for 16 through 19, 21 through 24, and so on. The British list contributes the blue sapphire and platinum entries at years 65 and 70.

British differences to know

Anniversary gifts by year are not identical in every country, and the difference that matters first is the swap of paper and cotton across the first two years. Many older British guides put cotton first and paper second, although some allow the American order.

Year American British
1st Paper Cotton
2nd Cotton Paper
4th Fruit and flowers Linen or silk
6th Iron Sugar
8th Bronze Bronze or salt

American lists also carry alternates. Year 6 sometimes adds candy or sugar, year 8 adds pottery, year 9 adds willow, and year 12 adds linen. Year 14 has shifted the most: many people now give gold jewelry in place of ivory. Today many British guides have moved toward the American order for the first two years, but the swap still appears often enough to catch people off guard.

When two lists disagree, no official version settles the matter. Use the version the couple or your family already knows, or choose the material that leads you to a better present for the person in front of you.

Where the list came from

The list grew in three stages: a German wreath custom, a Victorian habit of tying gifts to the year, and the traditional and modern columns compiled later by reference librarians.

In German-speaking Europe, an older custom called for a wife to receive a silver wreath from friends at 25 years of marriage and a gold wreath at 50. That pair is the reason we still call those anniversaries silver and golden.

By the nineteenth century, in the Victorian era, year-linked gifts had become common in English-speaking countries. The earliest entries were paper for year 1, wood for year 5, and tin for year 10. Those three materials have stayed in the list ever since.

Emily Post set out eight anniversaries in her 1922 book Etiquette: paper for the first, wood for the fifth, tin for the tenth, crystal for the fifteenth, china for the twentieth, silver for the twenty-fifth, gold for the fiftieth, and diamond for the seventy-fifth. She treated the paper, wooden, and tin presents as mostly jokes, called crystal the first one taken seriously, and said silver was always serious. For a golden wedding she advised a family dinner.

In 1937 the American National Retail Jeweler Association, now Jewelers of America, published a longer list, adding entries for years that had none. That expansion helps explain why the modern column leans so heavily on jewelry and objects people might buy at a jewelry counter.

Later, reference librarians at the Chicago Public Library compiled the paired traditional and modern columns that became the version now in widest use in the United States.

How to use the list without overthinking it

Traditional anniversary gifts and modern anniversary gifts are prompts, not rules, and the strongest choice is usually the one that fits the person you are celebrating.

  • Pick one column. The pair for year 9 is pottery or leather. Choose a handmade ceramic bowl for your partner who cooks, and leave the leather on the shelf.
  • Use both columns in one present. Year 2 pairs cotton with china. Wrap a set of simple china plates inside a soft cotton robe, or give a china mug with a folded cotton napkin beside it.
  • Read the material loosely. Year 5 says wood, but the gift can be a wooden cutting board, a live tree, or a new shelf for the room you share. You are honoring the material itself.
  • Match the year for parents or friends. For a 40th anniversary, the ruby theme can become a pair of ruby-colored glass tumblers or a bouquet of deep red flowers. You do not need to spend like a spouse on a fine gem.
  • Skip the list when the person is not a theme person. If the couple hates objects or already has everything, a shared dinner, a weekend away, or a donation in their name will land better. The year is only a starting place.

In practice, spouses often exchange a gift each year, while relatives and friends tend to give around the milestone years, when a party or group gesture gives the date more weight.

Notes for the big anniversary years

Couples tend to keep early years small and then gather people for the milestone years, especially 25 and 50. These notes cover the years most people ask about, with links to fuller gift lists where they exist.

Year 1: paper and clocks

Year 1 pairs paper with clocks. Write a letter that recalls the day you got married, have your vows printed and framed, or mark the spot of your first home on a printed map. Paper is the one material where the thought can carry more weight than the price.

Year 5: wood and silverware

Year 5 pairs wood with silverware. A wooden keepsake box, a hand-carved salad bowl, or a set of walnut picture frames all honor the material without feeling like a novelty. Silverware can mean a flatware upgrade or one beautiful serving piece you will use all year.

Year 10: tin or aluminum and diamond jewelry

Year 10 pairs tin or aluminum with diamond jewelry. Tin reads as nostalgic and approachable: a vintage tin sign, a set of tin camp mugs, or a framed tin tile gives you a gift with some age to it. Diamond jewelry can be small, but the decade feels large.

Year 25: silver

Year 25 is silver in both columns. Silver jewelry, a gleaming picture frame, or a polished serving tray all mark the day without requiring anything engraved. If you want to go further, gather notes from 25 people who were there.

Year 50: gold

Year 50 is gold in both columns. Gold jewelry, a gold watch, a memory book with gold-leaf edges, or candleholders in a soft gold finish that borrows the metal all work. The milestone deserves a party more than a single object, so give the gift early in the evening and build the toast around it.

Years 20, 30, 40, and 60: china, platinum, pearl, diamond, ruby

Year 20 pairs china with platinum. China suggests a serving platter you will set out for every anniversary dinner from now on, while platinum could be a pair of platinum cuff links. Year 30 pairs pearl with diamond; a pearl pendant suits the year, and a slim diamond accent ring marks the day without a large stone.

Year 40 pairs ruby with ruby, and year 60 pairs diamond with diamond. For both, jewelry is the obvious route, but a ruby-colored vase or a red linen tablecloth carries the meaning in a softer way. A diamond-patterned glass decanter can do the same for year 60.

For couples in Commonwealth realms such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, a King’s congratulatory message can be sent on application for the 60th, 65th, and 70th wedding anniversaries, and then every year. That formal note sits apart from gift giving, but it adds weight to those later celebrations.

What to write in the card

The key to what to write in an anniversary card is to name the anniversary number, recall one specific shared memory, and close with a hope for the years still coming. For a spouse, use private details and speak in your own voice. For parents, thank them for the home or the example they set. For another couple, keep the memory warm but not intimate.

Messages for a spouse or partner

Marcus,
Twelve years ago we ordered too much takeout and danced in the kitchen until the neighbors knocked. I would still choose you in every version of that night.
Happy 12th anniversary. Here’s to more terrible dancing.
Love, Priya
To Elena,
I keep a photo from our wedding on my desk. It is not the posed one; it is the one where you are mid-laugh because my aunt stepped on your train.
Happy 9th anniversary. You are still my favorite person to laugh with.
All my love, Sam
Happy 7th anniversary, love.
Seven years, two apartments, one very dramatic cat, and about a thousand cups of coffee on the couch. This year I just want more of all of it, except maybe the apartment moves.
Yours, Alex

Messages for parents

Mom and Dad,
Happy 38th anniversary. I still think about Sunday mornings with pancakes in the shape of whatever animal we begged for. Thank you for making ordinary weekends feel steady.
Love, Theo
Mom and Dad,
Happy twenty-fifth anniversary. The silver is real in the list, but what shines most is watching you two still save each other the last bite of dessert. Here’s to the next quarter century.
Love, Maya and Tom

Messages for another couple

Dear Nora and June,
Happy 10th anniversary. A decade in, you still look at each other like the band is about to start. That is the whole trick, I think. Wishing you a loud, lovely night.
Love, Mina
Dear Ben and Samira,
Happy 8th anniversary. Eight years of marriage means you have officially survived seven arguments about whose turn it is to load the dishwasher and one about the thermostat. May the thermostat stay at Samira’s number.
Love, Dave and Lena
Happy 30th anniversary, both of you. Thirty years in, and you remain the couple everyone else quietly copies.
Dear Aunt Ruth and Uncle Cal,
Happy 60th anniversary. All of us, from the youngest cousins to the people who remember the first toast, send our love. You built the table we all keep gathering around.
With love, the Nguyen family

When to turn the anniversary into a party

An anniversary party is usually hosted by the couple themselves or by their adult children, and it fits best at milestone years from 25 onward. Early years tend to stay smaller: dinner for two, a family meal, or a toast at home. By year 25 and beyond, the guest list often widens into the circle that has known the couple longest.

Mail the invitations three to six weeks ahead, and send them sooner if out-of-town guests will need to book flights. Every invitation should answer a guest’s practical questions.

  • The couple’s full names and the anniversary number
  • Who is hosting, especially when children are giving the party
  • Date, start time, and venue
  • Dress code or party style, such as garden lunch or cocktail dinner
  • Reply-by date and a phone or email for replies
  • A request for no gifts or a note directing guests to a favorite charity

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between traditional and modern anniversary gifts?

The traditional column uses older materials such as paper, wood, and iron, while the modern column adds later gifts such as clocks, appliances, and jewelry. Both columns meet at the same gem or metal for years 25, 40, 45, 50, 55, and 60: silver, ruby, sapphire, gold, emerald, and diamond. Choose whichever column gives you a stronger present idea for the person, or blend the two in one gift.

Are anniversary gifts by year official or compulsory?

No authority governs the list, and no couple is required to follow it. The traditional and modern pairings now in widest use were compiled by reference librarians at the Chicago Public Library, but even those lists have variations. Treat the year themes as a shared language for gift giving. A thoughtful gift outside the list always beats a forced one inside it.

What is the gift for 11 years of marriage?

The traditional gift for 11 years of marriage is steel, and the modern gift is fashion jewelry. Steel can mean a watch with a steel case, a kitchen knife, a set of steel tools, or a piece of steel garden art. Fashion jewelry lets you give something personal and wearable without the pressure of fine jewelry.

What are the 20 year anniversary gifts?

Year 20 gives you china in the traditional column and platinum in the modern column. For china, choose a large serving bowl, a vase, or a tea set the couple will use on quiet mornings. For platinum, consider a slim platinum band, a platinum tie bar, or a piece with a bright silver-white finish that borrows the anniversary metal. Either route marks two decades without needing to buy a showpiece.

Why are there no gifts listed for every year after 15?

The classic list assigns gifts to every year from 1 through 15, then jumps to 20, 25, and every fifth year through 60. The gaps between those anniversary years have no traditional or modern entry, so you are not missing anything. For an unlisted year, borrow from the nearest milestone or simply choose a gift with personal meaning to the couple.

What are the gifts for 65, 70, and 75 years?

The 65th anniversary is blue sapphire, the 70th is platinum, and the 75th is diamond and gold. No modern alternative is assigned to these three years. The British list supplies the materials for 65 and 70, while the 75th follows the diamond tradition tied to Emily Post’s original list.

Is the British anniversary gift list the same as the American one?

No. Many older British guides give cotton for year 1 and paper for year 2, while the United States list makes paper year 1 and cotton year 2. Some older British reference books also give linen or silk for year 4, sugar for year 6, and bronze or salt for year 8. Citizens of the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and other Commonwealth realms can apply for a King’s congratulatory message at the 60th, 65th, and 70th anniversaries and then every year.
