Print Your Own Design

Foil printing choices and preparation

Foil printing is a print-only service for your own design. You send a finished file, choose a finish, approve a proof and we print in Melbourne. Every invitation order includes white envelopes, and a designer proof is prepared before anything goes to press. If you are weighing this against other methods, the wider print your own design service covers digital, white ink and more.

Flat foil versus foil stamp for supplied artwork

Flat foil applies metallic foil without a custom die. It gives a smooth, mirror-bright surface and a shorter production time than foil stamp. The minimum is 10 cards, and production is 7 to 10 working days after proof approval. If the most important thing is shine without a pressed texture, this is the lighter production route.

Foil stamp uses a custom die to press foil into the card with heat and pressure, leaving a tactile impression with the shine. The minimum is 50 cards, and production is 20 to 23 working days after proof approval. Choose it when the pressed texture matters more than speed. If you would rather buy a finished concept, browse foil stamp designs in the wedding invitation collection.

Foil colors

Gold foil printing is available with both flat foil and foil stamp, as are silver, rose gold and copper. Foil stamp adds 11 more colors, including holographic. You can choose one foil color per layer or plate in the artwork, and the proof will show how the finish sits on your selected cardstock.

If the design uses a single metal, send one vector layer for that color. If it uses two or more, separate them clearly so each foil can be quoted and set up correctly.

Papers that take foil

Flat foil prints on Matte 300gsm and Matte Double Thick 600gsm cardstock. It also works on color stocks including black, navy, kraft, red and gray, which gives foil a high-contrast ground. Foil stamp uses Wild Cotton 300gsm. Letterpress also runs on Wild Cotton 300gsm and Wild Cotton 600gsm double thick.

Because foil reads differently on each surface, ordering a swatch kit for paper and foil is the surest way to check the actual finish. A printed sample of your own artwork is also available for flat foil at US$20 for the first copy. For a non-foil tactile impression, see letterpress printing for your own design on the same cotton stocks.

Preparing foil artwork

Foil needs clean single-color vector artwork, supplied as AI or EPS, with one file or layer per foil color. Photos, gradients and soft shadows cannot be foiled, so keep them in the digital print layer if they appear on the card. Keep text and key artwork at least 0.25 in (6 mm) inside the trim.

A print-ready PDF is the preferred file for the full card: CMYK, 0.125 in (3 mm) bleed on every side, 300 dpi, fonts outlined or embedded and images embedded. The quote form accepts up to 20 MB per file in JPG, PNG, ZIP, RAR or PDF. If the foil layer is not separated, the design team can prepare it from your artwork for a fee from US$59, stated in the quote.

Combining foil with digitally printed color

One card can carry full-color digital print and foil. Supply the digital artwork as your usual print-ready PDF and the foil as a separate single-color vector layer. The two finishes are produced on the same card, so the proof needs to be checked for alignment and how the colors sit together.

Photos, watercolor and gradients print beautifully in digital color, while the foil accents stay mirror-bright. If the same file contains both finishes, label the layers clearly in your upload so the quote can be accurate.

Timing and pricing

A quote comes back within 1 to 2 business days of your upload. Once you accept it, print-only jobs are paid in full before proofing starts. A designer proof then arrives within 1 to 2 business days, and nothing prints until you approve it. Proof rounds are unlimited and carry no charge.

Flat foil production takes 7 to 10 working days after proof approval and can be expedited to 3 to 5 working days for US$40 per order. Foil stamp takes 20 to 23 working days and cannot be expedited. Foil costs more per card than digital print, and exact pricing comes in the quote.
