Print Your Own Design

Choosing foil for your own design

Our foil printing service takes a finished PDF or vector file and gives it metallic colour on card. You can print your own design in flat foil with a 10-card minimum, or choose a foil stamp with a custom die at a 50-card minimum. The method shapes the feel, paper, minimum and production timeline, so compare the two methods before you upload.

Flat foil versus foil stamp for supplied artwork

Flat foil applies metallic foil without a custom die, leaving a smooth, mirror-bright shine and no pressed impression. The minimum order is 10 cards and production takes 7 to 10 working days after you approve the proof, which keeps it practical when the date is close.

Foil stamp uses a custom die to press the foil into the card with heat and pressure, so the shine comes with a tactile impression. The minimum is 50 cards and production takes 20 to 23 working days after approval. It is worth the extra production time for a more layered, tactile finish. Browse foil stamp designs to see the character it adds.

Foil colours

Flat foil is available in gold, silver, rose gold and copper, covering most invitation palettes. If you want gold foil printing in a particular tone, describe it in the quote request; the proof is the moment to see how the shade reads on your chosen card.

Foil stamp adds 11 more colours, including holographic. Tell us the finish you want and the team can advise the closest match.

Papers that take foil

Flat foil sits on Matte 300gsm for a smooth modern card or Matte Double Thick 600gsm for extra weight. It also goes on colour stocks in black, navy, kraft, red and grey, so dark invitations can carry bright metallic foil without losing their depth.

Foil stamp is printed on Wild Cotton 300gsm, a thick cotton card that takes a clean pressed impression.

Preparing foil artwork

For foil, send clean single-colour vector artwork as an AI or EPS file, with one file or layer per foil colour. Photos, gradients and soft shadows cannot be foiled. The same clean single-colour vector approach carries over to letterpress printing for your own design. If you are working from Canva, export as PDF Print, but remember Canva cannot export a separate foil layer, so the foil areas still need to become vector artwork.

For any supplied design, upload a print-ready PDF in CMYK with 3 mm bleed on every side and 300 dpi at final print size. Fonts should be outlined or embedded and images embedded, with text and key artwork kept at least 6 mm inside the trim. AI, EPS and PSD files are also accepted. The form accepts up to 20 MB per file in JPG, PNG, ZIP, RAR or PDF. If the file is not print-ready, the design team can prepare it for a fee from A$75; the quote says if this applies.

Combining foil with digitally printed colour on one card

Foil does not have to work alone. On the same card, digital print can carry a photo, watercolour or gradient, while flat foil adds metallic names, a border or a monogram in gold, silver, rose gold or copper.

Combining methods still follows the file rules for both: one vector file or layer for the foil and a separate print-ready file for the digital colour. This keeps full-colour artwork on digital print and metallic detail on foil, and the quote confirms the combined price and production timeline.

Timing and pricing

After you submit the quote request form, the quote comes back within 1 to 2 business days. Print-only jobs are paid in full before proofing starts, and the proof then arrives within 1 to 2 business days of acceptance. Proof rounds are unlimited and carry no charge; most customers need three to five.

Flat foil production takes 7 to 10 working days after approval, or 3 to 5 working days with expedited printing for an extra A$50 per order. Foil stamp cannot be expedited. Foil costs more per card than digital print, and entry digital pricing starts from A$3.50 per card with white envelopes included. Before committing, order a paper and print sample pack for A$5 or a full swatch kit for A$20.

FAQ

What is the difference between flat foil and foil stamp?

Flat foil applies metallic foil without a custom die, so it has a smooth, mirror-bright finish and no pressed impression. It needs a minimum of 10 cards and takes 7 to 10 working days after proof approval. Foil stamp uses a custom die to press foil into the card with heat and pressure, leaving a tactile impression. It starts at 50 cards and takes 20 to 23 working days.

Can I foil a Canva design?

Yes, but Canva cannot export a separate foil layer. Download your design as PDF Print at maximum quality, with bleed and crop marks ticked if offered. The foil elements then need to become clean single-colour vector artwork. Paperlust can prepare that from your Canva file for a fee from A$75, confirmed in the quote.

Which foil colours are available?

Flat foil comes in gold, silver, rose gold and copper. Foil stamp adds 11 more colours, including holographic, so it gives you the widest palette. If your design uses a specific metallic shade, mention it in the quote request and we can confirm the closest match before you approve a proof.

What is the minimum order for foil?

Flat foil has a minimum of 10 cards. Between 11 and 14 cards is priced at the 10 rate, and 15 to 19 cards is priced at the 20 rate. Foil stamp has a minimum of 50 cards. Exact pricing for your quantity is confirmed in the quote before anything prints.

Does foil work on black or navy card?

Yes. Flat foil can be applied to colour stocks in black, navy, kraft, red and grey, as well as Matte 300gsm and Matte Double Thick 600gsm. Foil stamp is printed on Wild Cotton 300gsm, so ask about dark colour options for that method in the quote.

How long does foil printing take?

Flat foil production takes 7 to 10 working days after you approve the proof, or 3 to 5 working days with expedited printing for A$50 per order. Foil stamp takes 20 to 23 working days and cannot be expedited. Australian delivery is free by StarTrack Premium, usually next business day to metro areas.

How much does foil printing cost?

Foil pricing depends on method, quantity, paper and file readiness. Entry digital printing starts from A$3.50 per card, and foil or foil stamp costs more per card than digital print. A paper and print sample pack is A$5, and a full swatch kit is A$20. Your quote confirms the amount within 1 to 2 business days.
