We have used Paperlust many times, for invitations, welcome signs, save the dates, place cards, seating charts etc and we are always happy. Customer service is 10/10, if there is an issue with anything and you raise it, they work and work until you are happy with the result. They are also very reasonably priced compared to other places. Will be using them again in the future.

Carrisa responded straight away, completely reassured me, and let me know they could abs ...

Custom Printed Photo Wedding Invitations

You already have the photograph that matters. The harder part is deciding how that single image will translate into an invitation, because crop and file quality matter as much as the design you choose. Photo wedding invitations are not a separate product. They are wedding invitations where your photograph sits inside the layout, and everything is still printed, proofed, and shipped to your door.

Start with the image. An engagement session gives you a polished, well lit portrait. A candid from your own camera roll gives you something looser and more personal. Whichever direction you take, the image has to work in a square, portrait, or landscape crop depending on the template, and it has to hold up when enlarged. Once you settle on the image, the rest of the process sits within the larger wedding invitations range at Paperlust.

Start with the photo, not the card

Most people choose a design first, then hunt for a picture that fits it. That order creates extra work. A photo from an engagement session may look best in a full bleed layout, while a casual picture of the two of you may suit a smaller frame with clean white space. Picture wedding invitations work best when the image and the wording agree, so start there. Before you settle on a card, decide what the picture is doing. Is it the whole invitation, or a smaller personal detail beside the wording?

The crop changes more than most couples expect. A portrait photograph centers the two of you and leaves less room for long lines of text. A landscape photograph sits across the top and lets the wording breathe. Square photos feel like keepsakes and suit a single card design. None of these choices are wrong. They decide how much room the photo takes before you start typing names and dates.

What your photo needs to survive at invitation size

A phone photo can look perfect on a screen and still fail on printed stationery. The same image has to stretch across a much larger surface, and low resolution shots can pixelate or soften at invitation size. Upload a file that is at least 300 dpi at the printed size, or about 2MB. That gives the press enough information to keep skin tones and fine detail clean.

Do not judge a photo by how sharp it looks when you zoom out. Open it at full size and inspect the edges of hair, jewelry, and text on signs. If those edges blur or break into squares, the invitation will not fix them.

Photo wedding invitations: from your upload to the proof

Once the photo is chosen, the process has three steps. Pick a design from 500+ exclusive options by independent artists. Upload the photograph into the template and change the wording until it says exactly what you want. The personalization happens in an online editor, with no software to install. Then a designer reviews the placement and quality of the image as part of the proof before anything prints.

That proof is not a formality. It is where a professional designer catches details you are too close to see, such as a face near the edge or text crossing a busy part of the image. You receive the proof within 1 to 2 business days, and two rounds of edits are included at no extra cost. Nothing prints until you approve the proof. The same flow applies to photo save the date cards if you are starting guest communications earlier.

Print methods for wedding invitations with photos

Paperlust offers several print methods, and each one changes how a photograph reads. Digital printing is the natural home for photography. It reproduces continuous tone without obvious print texture, keeping faces and gradients smooth. Metallic and white ink can add soft sheen or contrast while still letting the photo carry the card.

Flat foil, letterpress, and foil stamping bring sculptural feel, but they behave differently on a photographic image. Foil behind or across a photo can obscure fine detail, and letterpress suits text and line work more than continuous tone. If the photograph is the hero, digital is usually the safest starting point. If you want texture or shine, expect the photo to share attention with the finishing.

Print methodProduction timeMinimum order
Digital3 to 5 business days10
Metallic3 to 5 business days10
White Ink3 to 5 business days10
Flat Foil7 to 10 business days10
Letterpress20 to 23 business days10
Foil Stamping20 to 23 business days50

Each design is made to order in the Melbourne studio, and production time starts after you approve the proof.

Samples, minimums, and delivery across the US

A photo can look different across print methods, so a sample pack is the most useful early step. Paperlust offers a $4 sample pack with seven designs across different print methods, including a letterpress sample. A custom sample of your own design is available for most methods, but not letterpress. Every order is made to order in the Melbourne studio with a professional designer assigned, from first proof to final pack.

Orders start at 10 cards on every method except foil stamping, which starts at 50. Once you approve the proof, production time follows the table above. DHL Express then carries the finished order to all 50 US states in 2 to 4 business days. US orders over $350 ship free, and every order is backed by the 100% happiness guarantee.

Photo postcards: one card, lower postage

If the invitation is a single photo card and you do not need an envelope or separate suite, a postcard format can keep the mailing simple. Photo postcards mail as one card with no envelope, and they qualify for the lower USPS postcard rate. That can matter when the guest list is long and the budget is already committed elsewhere.

Postcards still go through the same designer review, print process, and proof approval as larger cards. The lower postage does not change the resolution rule.

Frequently asked questions about photo wedding invitations

Can I print my own photo wedding invitations at home?

No. Paperlust does not provide a downloadable file, a printable PDF, or a home printing template. You personalize the design in the online editor, a professional designer checks the proof, and the finished cards are printed in the Melbourne studio and shipped to your US address.

How do I know if my photo is high enough quality?

Use a file that is at least 300 dpi at the size it will be printed, or about 2MB. Phone photos at low resolution can pixelate or soften once they are enlarged to invitation size. If the full size image breaks into blurry squares around hair and fine detail, choose a different photo or a smaller print size.

What print method works best for wedding invitations with photos?

Digital printing is the natural match for photography because it keeps skin tones and gradients smooth. Metallic and white ink can also flatter a photo. Flat foil, letterpress, and foil stamping add texture and shine, but they can overpower fine photographic detail. If the photo is the focus, digital is usually the safest choice.

How long will my photo wedding invitations take to arrive?

After you approve the proof, production takes 3 to 5 business days for digital, metallic, and white ink, 7 to 10 for flat foil, and 20 to 23 for letterpress and foil stamping. DHL Express transit to all 50 US states then adds 2 to 4 business days.

Do photo wedding invitations mail as postcards?

Only if you choose a single postcard format. A postcard mails with no envelope and no separate suite at the lower USPS postcard rate. Larger invitation cards and full stationery suites do not qualify for postcard postage.

Do you send a digital file of my photo wedding invitation?

No. Everything Paperlust sells is printed and shipped. You design online and approve a proof, but no downloadable file or printable PDF is sent. The term digital on this page refers to digital printing on a press, not a file.

Do photo wedding invitations look cheap?

No. A well-designed photo card invitation on quality stock looks genuinely beautiful. The difference between a cheap photo invitation and a premium one is the template design, paper quality, and print method. Paperlust invitations are printed on premium cardstock with accurate color reproduction; the result feels and looks like a professional product.

Should my save the date and invitation both have photos?

Many couples use a photo save the date and then either a photo or non-photo invitation. A common approach is a casual engagement photo for the save the date and a more formal or styled photo for the invitation. Both can be designed from the same template family for a cohesive suite.

What if I don't have professional engagement photos yet?

A high-quality photo from a smartphone in good natural light can work for invitations, as resolution is the key factor, not equipment. That said, an engagement shoot produces the best results and gives you multiple high-quality images to choose from. Many couples schedule their engagement shoot specifically to have photos ready for their stationery order.
